The Acceleration Exchange is M1A’s proposal for installation at Anaheim’s new ‘ARTIC’ Regional Transportation Center. The project, the wayfinding pavilion, reflects Meridian 105′s ongoing exploration of equation-based parametric modeling and design processes towards fabrication. Placed in a large outdoor facilitiy area, the piece activates the cityscape, an encouraging appeal within and around and a primary orientation point for connecting travelers. The shape makes reference to the topic of transporting a larger vehicle, modeled by the application of a wave and acceleration formulas acting on its shape. The resulting pavilian is a twisting organic gesture. The setup is a fabrication of GFRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) tube volumes formed from a digital model. Finished GFRP encase structural steel structure cantilevered from concrete foundations stabilized horizontally by the spine. Structural diaphram provides additonal stiffness at the pavilian open edge.
